Collaborative Effort Focused on Community Needs and Enhanced Mobility

The Montrose Boulevard Improvement Project is a vital initiative designed to enhance one of the city’s most important north-south corridors. Montrose Boulevard, a key route connecting Houstonians to the Museum District, the Houston Zoo, the Texas Medical Center, Ismaili Center, Buffalo Bayou Park, and other popular destinations, will soon undergo much-needed improvements.

The design focuses on four main goals: Improving drainage, improving mobility and safety for all users consistent with the City’s Guiding Mobility Principles, promoting a pedestrian-friendly environment, and preserving as many trees as possible. These principles include maintaining general-purpose traffic lanes, providing safe sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, and ensuring reliable service for emergency responders. The Montrose Boulevard Improvement Project ties in with the TIRZ’s recently approved North Montrose Safe Routes to School project.
The collaboration between the Montrose TIRZ, the Whitmire Administration, with input from Council Member Abbie Kamin, and Public Works reflects a shared commitment to addressing the needs of Houstonians through improved mobility, safety, and infrastructure.

The TIRZ project will reconstruct Montrose Boulevard from Allen Parkway to W Clay, while Public Works will address drainage needs by replacing aging inlets beginning at W Clay and continuing south to Mecom Fountain.

The Montrose TIRZ project is set to break ground in the first quarter of 2025. Public Works will work in tandem with the TIRZ timeline. Continuous updates regarding the Montrose Blvd project will be provided in-person and virtually in future TIRZ 27 Board Meetings.
