Safety on Montrose streets is getting a closer look. At its July 20 meeting, the Montrose Redevelopment Authority board unanimously approved a neighborhood-wide streetlight audit, set to begin in August.
Why it matters
Good lighting isn’t just about visibility — it’s a core part of keeping streets and sidewalks safe after dark for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. The TIRZ’s Projects, Planning and Parking (PPP) Committee flagged gaps in street lighting as a safety priority, and the board is now putting resources behind fixing it.
What the audit will do
The TIRZ has brought in HR Green, the civil engineering firm behind many of the neighborhood’s infrastructure projects, to lead the study. HR Green will work with CenterPoint Energy to map every existing streetlight in Montrose, then assess where lights are missing or spaced too far apart to adequately light the roadway.
The findings will be compiled into a report and exhibit for the PPP Committee’s review — and could shape future capital improvement projects focused on street lighting across the neighborhood. The audit carries a budget of $16,444 and kicks off in August.
